In the internet era, businesses move online or get left behind, which is why so many founders and established companies commission an app as the route to a commercial shift. There are two broad approaches, and understanding them before signing is the difference between a product that grows and one that hits a wall.
The two approaches
A template, or custom development. They are not two prices for the same thing; they are two different ceilings.
Templates
A template means taking existing code and configuring it, which is why it is quick and cheap. The cost is extensibility. Suppose the app is live and doing well, and you want to add livestreaming. You cannot, in any meaningful sense, and even a version that technically works will work badly.
That is not a reason to dismiss it. A template suits a first venture, a test of an idea, or a business with a mature and settled model. A student who wants to try a campus errand service is better served by buying a template, using it, learning how the business actually works, and spending properly on the second attempt. A social commerce team whose model is already proven can use a hosted SaaS product for the same reason.
Custom development, and its three forms
Custom means building the product, and there are three ways to do it.
Native. The expensive option, and the slowest. It also delivers the fullest function set, the best experience, and by a distance the best maintainability and extensibility later.
Hybrid, meaning native plus H5. Fast to build, which is the appeal. The trade-offs are security, and a real constraint: at a later stage you cannot swap out the interface or add functions freely.
H5 packaged, sometimes called a web app: the product built with web technology. Cheap, and it shows. Response is slow, page transitions are not smooth, and images and animation are poorly supported.
The recommendation
Prices across custom development vary enormously, but the decision should not be made on price alone. For anything intended to run and grow for years, native is the right answer, and hybrid or H5 should be entered into with clear eyes about what they will not be able to do.
The money saved on a cheaper build method is usually spent later, on a rebuild, at the worst possible moment: when the business is working and the product cannot keep up with it.
