Mini programs have become the direction mobile commerce has settled on, and a great many merchants now want a store of their own inside WeChat. So how does one actually get built?
Four steps, and none of them requires a developer.
1. Decide what it is
Before touching a template, be clear about the requirements. What kind of store is this? Which functions does it need? What should it look like?
Those answers decide which template is right, and answering them after you have picked one is how people end up with a shop that cannot do what the business needs. Ten minutes with a pen is worth more than an hour browsing templates.
2. Choose the platform
Then find a reliable platform to build on. This choice matters more than it appears: the platform determines the quality of the templates and, more importantly, whether anyone is there to help when something goes wrong.
Cheap platforms are cheap because support is the thing they have removed. For a business whose shop depends on the product, that is the wrong economy.
3. Build the store
Inside the platform, choose a template and start changing it. Applying a mall template is closer to filling in a form than to building software: a visual editor handles the functions, the product copy, the home page banner, the short video guides and the marketing sections.
No programming knowledge is involved. Basic computer literacy is enough, which is the point of the whole approach.
4. Publish
Configure everything, save it, and the store is built. Then go to the admin back end, authorise your mini program account, and submit for review in one click. After that it is a wait for publication.
Where the time actually goes
The build takes an afternoon. What takes longer is the part nobody plans for: the product photographs, the copy, the pricing, the first promotion. The software is now the easy half of opening a store, and the merchandising is the half that decides whether anyone buys.
