A great many offline businesses have decided to put their operations online — to open up possibilities a shopfront does not have, and to keep control of their own service process through a digital channel. The moment that decision is made, the next question arrives: mini program or app? What separates them, and where does each one actually lose?
Apps came first, so start there. What an app is good at is the sticky user — the person who opens the product every day. Every subsequent entry is one tap from the home screen, and once someone has downloaded an app the cost of uninstalling it is higher than the cost of leaving it there. A delivery rider who takes and dispatches orders through an app all day is the textbook case: the tool is used constantly and at length, so the app wins. Put simply, an app holds traffic once it has arrived.
The weakness is at the front: acquisition. An app has to be downloaded and registered before it does anything at all. Phone storage is a real constraint, and it is especially tight on iPhone; the first screen is the most valuable space a phone has, and there are only about twenty slots on it. Getting into one of them is hard. That gap is what mini programs were created to fill in 2017. Almost anything an app can do, a mini program can now largely do as well — but its structural advantage is on the acquisition side. Share a mini program and the other person is inside it in one tap: no download, no registration. Tencent also caps the package size, historically two megabytes, so it barely touches storage.
So where does the mini program lose? Retention. It cannot put an icon on the home screen, which means the second visit starts with opening WeChat and searching for it again — and traffic leaks away at every one of those steps.
The summary is short. An app suits users you already have; a mini program suits reach and acquisition. For most companies the practical answer is to do both: use the mini program to bring people in, then work deliberately on moving that traffic into the app.
