What to Consider Before Building a Corporate Website

Building a corporate website touches a great many things, and which of them matter depends on where you are standing. Here is our own summary of the parts that consistently do.

Up front, a site needs three things: a domain, hosting, and the program it runs on. After that it needs someone to operate it.

One point worth stating plainly: building a website is not a one-off act of creation. Requirements turn into design and design turns into development, but the process does not stop at launch. A site is revised as the market moves and as content accumulates, which makes it a long commitment rather than a single delivery.

The domain

A domain is a short string of letters ending in a dot-suffix, chosen to relate to the company or the product it sells. Whatever is short, memorable and defensible is the right answer. The domain will not decide whether the site succeeds — it is one factor among several, and not a heavy one.

The hosting

Hosting is the server the site lives on, and most sites now run on cloud hosting. Two things to check: how secure the provider is, and whether the plan’s capacity matches the content you intend to publish. Under-provision and the site slows down exactly when traffic finally arrives.

The program

Most builds run on PHP, which is well supported, thoroughly documented and cheap to host. Rather than take that on faith, look at what the company has actually built — a working example says more than a specification, and word of mouth is the best advertisement there is.

The operator

This is the one that gets missed, and it matters most. For the first three items, a reliable development company can hand you a good solution. The operator has to be yours. Plenty of companies finish a website with nobody assigned to run it and no budget line for the role; sometimes the person who commissioned it moves on, sometimes the work is outsourced to a party with no incentive to treat it as a full-time job. A site without an operator does not break — it decays quietly, and no one notices until the enquiries stop.
