What a Store Mini Program Mall Does for a Merchant

Once a store has its own mini program mall, it holds a marketing position inside WeChat rather than a page on the open web. The mechanism is Nearby Mini Programs: a customer opens WeChat, sees the stores around them, checks what each one offers, and walks in. Within the radius a store covers, its mini program is visible — which means advertising and foot traffic come from the same asset.

What the store mini program actually does

This is the question merchants ask first, and it is the right one. A store mini program is Tencent’s way of laying out local services inside WeChat, so the features are built around a physical location rather than around a catalogue.

It can show the location, the contact details, photographs of the shop floor, the services on offer, and video. More useful than any of that is card and coupon distribution. Once a merchant turns it on, a customer can collect the store’s membership card, a cash voucher or a payment voucher from inside the mini program. Print the mini program QR code and put it by the till, and the customer scans it to collect — against a printed flyer, the difference in convenience, and in whether that customer comes back, is not a close call.

The part that is not automatic

As a tool that joins online and offline, a mini program is convenient for the customer, for the merchant, and for the merchant’s marketing. What is not automatic is the operation. Turning the mini program into value depends on deliberate promotion, and on the merchant understanding the basics of mobile marketing — how a coupon campaign is timed, what a member is worth over a year, which channel actually produced the visit. The tool is the easy half; the habit of running it is the other half.
