Cars have become the default way most families get around, and the services built around them have had to keep up. Fuel is the most frequent of those services, and the one where location matters most. Filling up near home is easy; filling up in a place you do not know is not, because a petrol station is not a convenience store on every corner. That is the gap an online layer closes.
Why it is worth building
Fuel is bought more often than almost any other motoring service, so service quality is what decides where a driver stops. The transaction looks routine, which is exactly why the details carry weight: most people assume price is the deciding factor, but in practice it is service that steers the choice.
A mini program does two things well here. It tells the driver where the nearest stations are and what they are charging right now, so the information is in hand instead of guessed at. And it does something a station cannot do on its own: delivery. If a car runs dry mid-journey, the driver orders through the mini program and the nearest station sends someone out with fuel. That one capability changes what the service is.
The feature set
1. A digital fuel card
Top up from WeChat or a bank card, then deduct at the pump without carrying a physical card. The small embarrassment of arriving without it disappears, and the station’s throughput improves because the payment step is shorter.
2. Fuel history
A visible record of every fill: when, where and for which vehicle, down to the plate number. It gives the driver a running total of what they actually spend on fuel — information almost nobody has — and it gives the station a reason to be opened outside a fill-up.
3. Adjacent services
Insurance, roadside assistance, nearby servicing and car washing, help with traffic violations, and a small shop for daily goods with pick-up at the station or delivery to the door. Each of these is a service the driver already buys somewhere else; putting them in one place is the value.
4. Sharing
After a purchase the driver can share the mini program to a group or to Moments for points, and the points are redeemable against gifts or against the next purchase. It is a cheap acquisition channel because it runs on the customer’s own network.
5. Location
Positioning that finds nearby stations, service points and car washes directly, with navigation that goes straight there rather than to the middle of a postcode.
6. A personal centre
Details, addresses, orders, services, points, preferences — the place where a customer manages their own account instead of calling the station to ask.
What it adds up to
A fuel station mini program joins the pump to WeChat Pay and shortens the sequence: arrive, fill, pay, get the electronic invoice, leave. Average payment time drops, throughput rises, and the station picks up the adjacent services the driver was going to buy anyway. That is where the extra revenue comes from — not from the fuel, which is a commodity, but from everything sold around it.
