How a Custom App Project Runs, Step by Step

1. Understand what the company needs

Start by settling what category of product the app is in, what its main functions are, what the screens should look like, what the logo is, and which type of app it is. Written out as a mind map, it gives the later stages something definite to build against — and its absence is why projects drift.

2. Analyse what the category actually requires

Wanting to build an e-commerce platform is not the same as wanting to build the next marketplace giant: that route needs a great deal of capital, and it needs a clear idea of what the app is for. Work from the customer’s actual need, decide the functional positioning objectively, and cut what is nice-to-have rather than necessary. Then build in what makes the company different. The same reasoning applies to any other category — the right app is the one that fits, not the one that is biggest.

3. Confirm the build plan

Different requirements mean different schedules, and the time has to be planned honestly rather than optimistically. What belongs in this stage: refining the details, designing a sensible database schema against the requirements, choosing a suitable server, and talking to the technical team often enough that the build does not go wrong quietly. If something needs changing, raise it then and there rather than at delivery. Once the functions are right, the project moves to close-out.
