China Mobile’s second Wutong Cup big data application innovation competition has opened its smart city track in Hubei. Student teams from universities across the country will work on big data applications, testing ideas against each other and looking for a new ecosystem for the industry.
The competition runs under the theme of racing through the data sea, and is split into three tracks: smart transport in Guangdong, smart rural in Zhejiang, and smart city in Hubei.
Hubei’s track is deliberately placed. As the first front line in the pandemic response, the province has made the smart city a core engine for economic recovery and urban growth — a data brain combining big data, AI, blockchain and IoT applications, alongside a deepening of the market-based reform of data as a factor of production and an acceleration of both scientific epidemic governance and the digital transformation of the economy. The intent, according to the company’s Hubei arm, is a governance model driven by data and decided scientifically, together with the more immediate work of developing students’ capacity for innovation, their sense of teamwork, and their ability to connect theory to practice.
In recent years Hubei Mobile has been building 5G as the foundation of a digital society. More than 30,000 mobile 5G base stations have been built and switched on, and 5G has begun to enter industry, energy, healthcare, transport, media and education, with demonstration projects intended as templates for other sectors.
The format has been revised from the first edition, with a high-energy training camp added to sharpen the competitors’ skills and widen their approach to the problems. The purpose is to bring big data talent into the operator’s own development work, and to do it while the students are still choosing what to work on.
