Since the Excellence Action Plan for Chinese scientific journals began, the number of journals ranking near the top of their fields has risen sharply: 96 journals now sit in the top 25% of their disciplines by ranking, 25 in the top 5%, 20 in the top three, and 7 at number one. Three journals, including Cell Research, post impact factors above 20 and rank in the global top 100.
International recognition is rising with the rankings. The number of overseas institutions citing Chinese science journals has grown from 864 to 9,608, and the countries and regions they come from from 42 to 124.
Coverage of emerging fields is widening too: 90 high-standard new journals founded since 2019 across artificial intelligence, quantum science, biomedical science, advanced manufacturing, energy and environment, and new materials.
The latest release also named ten ‘most beautiful covers’ of 2021 — designs pairing scientific accuracy with art, several drawing on traditional Chinese visual culture. The point of the exercise is confidence: a world-class journal industry is built one discipline at a time.
