IPv6 Traffic Doubles in a Year

For IPv6, 2021 was the milestone year: after network readiness and end-to-end connectivity, China’s deployment entered the traffic-growth era.

The policy push

The three-year special action plan for IPv6 traffic growth (2021-2023), issued in July 2021, set the targets. Implementation followed: a national deployment conference in August; a September notice bringing home wireless routers under radio type-approval monitoring for IPv6 support — the last 100 metres of terminal conversion; and an IPv6 standards working group formed the same month under the communications standards association.

The numbers

By the end of 2021, IPv6 carried 35.15% of mobile network traffic, up from 17.21% a year earlier, and 9.38% of fixed network traffic, up from 4.3% — both roughly doubling year on year and exceeding plan.

What comes next

The IPv6-plus innovation system is the second half of the story: next-generation internet technology built on IPv6, upgrading network and application infrastructure for industry after industry. Policy directs pilots in finance, energy, transport, education and government. Deployment is visible already — at the Winter Olympics, an IPv6-plus-based premium private network carried more than 150,000 terminals at full quality. As more applications support IPv6, traffic keeps climbing, and the protocol becomes the quiet foundation of an everything-connected era.
