On 17 November, MIIT brought together eight cloud drive companies – Baidu Netdisk, Tencent Weiyun, Tianyi Cloud Drive, HeCaiYun, Aliyun Drive, Xunlei Cloud Drive, 360 Safe Cloud Drive and NetEase Drive – to sign the Self-Regulation Convention on Personal Cloud Drive Service User Experience, aiming to raise service quality and user perception while keeping the market fair and orderly.
The convention covers undifferentiated upload and download speeds, innovation in technology, products and business models, clearer pricing, standardised marketing and open complaint channels. The eight companies pledged to launch ‘undifferentiated speed’ products in 2021 for all user types.
A month later, which firms have delivered? Reporters called all eight and tested the products. Tianyi Cloud Drive, HeCaiYun, Aliyun Drive, 360 Safe Cloud Drive and NetEase Drive confirmed their upgrades are complete, live on web, mobile and desktop simultaneously – though Tianyi and Aliyun’s web versions still require the desktop app for large-file downloads.
Baidu Netdisk’s Youth Edition, Tencent Weiyun and Xunlei Cloud Drive are pushing implementation under the convention and are in final testing, expected to launch their undifferentiated-speed products before 31 December.
As digital transformation spreads, cloud drives have become essential for work and life, and speed throttling has long been a top user complaint. MIIT’s push aims to let netizens truly ‘use, afford and use well’ internet services – while encouraging business-model innovation beyond the current single revenue model. Reporters will keep tracking the throttling issue and the rollout.
