As the new generation of traffic entrance, mini programs have become a powerful customer acquisition tool for businesses in the mobile era. At the development stage, however, you face a choice between source code and templates. This article compares the strengths and weaknesses of the two in detail.
By definition, source code is the original code of software, typed out line by line by programmers. For a mini program, it means the complete, usable code delivered after a development platform finishes building it.
A template, relatively speaking, is a SaaS model: a solution developed by a third-party platform, which also provides the services and maintenance support the software needs to run.
Cost comparison
Source code is generally sold on a buyout basis and can be copied without limit, so it costs several times more than a template. You must also handle, on your own, everything from server configuration, domain filing, bug fixing to feature iteration, which requires maintaining a complete technical team, conservatively estimated at around 500,000 yuan a year.
Templates come as one-stop service from the platform, with operational training and after-sales support included, so the industry norm is a renewal model: after the first-year purchase, you pay an annual renewal (usually a fraction of the first-year price) for the platform’s services. Merchants on templates only need essential roles such as operations and design staff, with no technical positions required.
The strengths and weaknesses of each
Because of the buyout model, source code can be redeveloped: new capabilities can be built on the original features to meet special needs. And a self-hosted server reduces the risk of data leakage, which for some industries is a basic requirement.
The weakness of source code is the high operating cost. Apart from medium and large internet companies, the vast majority of small and medium merchants simply cannot afford it. More importantly, mini programs are internet products whose technology iterates fast; without an excellent product team, source code struggles to keep up with industry trends.
The greatest advantage of templates as industry solutions is rapid deployment: no waiting for development, just approval, then launch. You can customise the interface and add or remove plugins to configure your own mini program, and running it is much easier.
But templates are not perfect either. Their generality often does not fully fit a specific merchant, and although costs are lower and renewal fees modest, the whole system is hosted by the platform, which to some extent means you are always in someone else’s hands.
Template or source code is usually not a question of better or worse; assess your budget and requirements comprehensively and choose what suits you best.
