Do You Know How to Drive Traffic with a Mini Program?

For offline stores the mini program is a dividend not to be missed, yet many shopkeepers feel lost facing an unfamiliar product, and winning customers through it seems out of reach. So XZS Tech shares several operating methods for offline store mini programs.

1. Acquire new users through nearby mini programs

Given WeChat’s user base, the Nearby mini programs section channels no less traffic than Meituan. A store’s mini program can cover every online user in the surrounding business area, and paired with limited-time coupons it drives large numbers of customers to redeem offers in store. Stores with content skills can publish marketing articles or videos on Douyin, official accounts and similar platforms, using a mini program code to guide users in to claim offers and bring traffic to the store. Any channel that reaches potential customers works: takeout businesses can tuck mini program code cards into delivery boxes to funnel Meituan customers over; guiding staff to share into group chats and Moments also draws traffic; and merchants with budget can simply buy advertising.

2. Fission group buying

The most effective fission tactics, such as gifts, free orders and red packets, are all driven by benefit: the bigger the offer, the better the result. Take the common group buy: set up the rules with a mini program group-buying plugin, say 20 percent off for two buyers and 50 percent off for three, then share the activity, and the users inviting their friends completes the fission. Users drawn into the store by a second round of sharing are fission resources too. Like-collection free orders are among the most common plays, and a distribution plugin can generate each user a personalised mini program code poster, so that inviting a set number of new users earns a free order, reaching more new users through their own networks.

3. Retention and stickiness

Relying on Meituan for traffic means living with high user churn. As a private-traffic vehicle, the mini program helps merchants build stickiness: it stays permanently after one open, My Mini Programs supports return visits, and template messages carry marketing news. Different user stages get different retention plans: new users see exclusive offers on entry, lifting conversion; good customers are anchored by a points mall and membership benefits that further cement their buying habits; and old customers are won back and reawakened with coupon pushes.

As online and offline merge, compared with third-party platforms and their many restrictions, the decentralised mini program is arguably a merchant’s best choice for moving into new retail.
