What Should Enterprises Note When Redesigning a Website?

Website redesigns are something everyone who builds websites eventually meets. Why does a website need redesigning? A key reason is that a website exists to serve users and must satisfy the great majority of them, but user needs never stand still, so the website too must change as those needs change.

Broadly, redesigns fall into four common modes by complexity: changes of appearance, adjustment of elements, restructuring of the site, and running multiple sites in parallel. Enterprises should pick the suitable mode by their actual needs and steer the site through a smooth transition.

1. The appearance update mode

Many corporate redesigns simply refresh the website’s appearance so users feel something has changed. In fact such a redesign touches none of the site’s sections, content or functions. This mode suits seasonal themes and changes of visual effect. When updating appearance, keep the site clean and understated overall; do not chase novelty so far that it obstructs users getting information.

2. The element adjustment mode

This mode does change some of the site’s sections, content and functions, and it has a very substantive effect. A newly redesigned site usually adds elements that fit the enterprise’s marketing needs, so the refreshed site performs better in promotion. This is also a fairly common mode of corporate website redesign.

3. The restructuring mode

Some corporate sites, never properly operated or maintained, draw almost no visitors after completion and their value never shows; such a site is effectively in shock, and it generally needs restructuring. Others, after a period of operation, find their past functions and services no longer meet present needs; then the site must be restructured too.

4. The multiple-sites-in-parallel mode

Practically every enterprise now has a website, but that does not mean it has only one. In fact many enterprises adopted a multi-site parallel strategy long ago.

So when redesigning, an enterprise may well consider running multiple sites in parallel, redesigning according to each different situation.
