What Makes WeChat Mini Programs Worth Building

Nothing to download, nothing to install: scan a code or search for the name and it opens. Because of that, and because it joins the online and offline sides of a business, both merchants and customers now prefer a mini program to an app for a great many tasks.

So what are the advantages, specifically?

1. Online and offline joined up

A mini program lets a physical shop and an online storefront work as one thing. A promotion in the shop can point a customer at a code, and the order lands in the system rather than in a conversation.

The reverse direction matters as much: a customer orders or books from the mini program and collects in the shop, which removes the queue and the waiting that used to be part of visiting.

2. Time saved, and nothing left behind

Unlike an app, there is no download, no installation and no registration flow to get through. Nothing is consumed on the phone’s storage.

That makes it a light version of an app rather than a lesser one. Shopping, food delivery, ticket booking: a few taps and the order is placed. And coming back later takes one gesture, through the recent mini programs list, so the pattern is use it, leave, come back when needed.

3. Many ways in

More than fifty entry points are open now: WeChat search, links from an official account, the nearby mini programs list, search history, direct shares, insertion inside articles, pinned chats, message pushes.

For a merchant that means a customer can arrive from wherever they happen to be, and it means every one of those routes can be worked. Group chats, the official account and the video channel can all be pointed at the same product, which is how a business gets multiple channels of exposure inside one ecosystem.

How to get one built

The process is broadly: register the account, complete the profile, then develop. The development is the part worth understanding.

Conventionally it means downloading the developer tools from the WeChat site and writing code, which requires programming knowledge. For a business with no technical team, that is a real obstacle.

The alternative is a visual builder: configure the product instead of coding it, and skip the part that needs a developer. A basic version can be assembled in a day or two, which is why this route suits most small businesses.
