Baidu Mini Programs vs WeChat Mini Programs

Technology keeps moving, and daily life keeps getting more convenient with it. A great deal of what used to need a separate app now happens inside mini programs on the platforms people already use. For an ordinary user the function is fairly narrow; for a business, the interesting part is elsewhere.

So what actually separates a Baidu mini program from a WeChat mini program?

1. Where the traffic comes in

WeChat’s entry points are mostly the ones people already inhabit: chat windows, group chats, shared cards, search. That makes the surface wide, and it keeps widening as the platform adds routes. The trade-off is that the entry points are controlled by the platform and change with it.

Baidu’s are less scattered. They sit inside Baidu’s own products, and there are many of them, but they are concentrated rather than dispersed. The platform opens its own search traffic to mini programs directly, which lets a business meet demand at the moment somebody is searching for it. For intent-driven categories, that is a different kind of value from WeChat’s social reach.

2. How they are built

WeChat’s ecosystem is closed. What you see inside WeChat is what WeChat has admitted, and that is deliberate: it keeps the experience consistent and the platform in control.

Baidu’s is open. Other software can, in principle, run its own mini programs there, and adaptation is light: a modest amount of code change turns an existing mini program into a Baidu intelligent mini program. The cost of being present on both is therefore much lower than the cost of maintaining two native apps.

Choosing

The question is not which platform is better, because they are solving different problems. If the business runs on relationships and repeat contact, WeChat’s density is the advantage. If it runs on being found when somebody searches, Baidu’s intent traffic is the advantage. Most businesses with a mini program already built will find the second presence cheap to add, and should decide on that basis rather than on preference.
