Custom Development or Secondary Development

Mini program development has grown quickly, and the vocabulary around it has grown with it. Two terms come up constantly: secondary development and custom development. Most people have a rough sense of both and no clear idea of the difference, which matters, because the difference decides what happens to the project three months in.

Custom development

Building from zero to one. The product goes from nothing to something: requirement analysis, software design, and the code itself, all written by the team.

What you are paying for is that the product matches the requirement exactly, and that the team that built it knows every part of it.

Secondary development

Taking an existing system and developing on top of it. Often it is a mature e-commerce platform, or a system already live that needs further iteration.

It is faster and cheaper, and it depends on something specific: continuity of the team. Whoever extends the system has to understand why it was built the way it was, and that knowledge is not in the code.

Why the cheap route often is not

For a new project, the temptation is to save money and go live quickly, so a cheap secondary development with a short schedule looks attractive. It is the route that drags a project into a long, expensive grind.

The reasons are predictable. The code is old. The handover between teams is incomplete. The new team does not understand the business. The result is a small function that a new team patches repeatedly, and each patch produces a new problem, because they are working on something they did not design.

None of that shows up in the quotation. It shows up in month four.

How to tell which you are being offered

Ask one question: is anything being reused? If the answer is yes, you are buying secondary development, and you should then ask who wrote the original, whether they are still available, and what documentation exists.

If the answer is no, you are buying a custom build, and the questions change to who is on the team and what the specification says.
