So What Does a Custom Mini Program Cost?

Is mini program development expensive? What does it cost? Start with the fact that the market splits into two kinds of company, and they are selling two different things.

The first kind: template resellers

Cheap. A few thousand up to about ten thousand and you are live, and you are live quickly.

The trouble starts when something needs changing. Watch for the low-price trap: it is entirely possible to end up paying more for modifications to a template than the template itself cost.

There are two structural problems beyond that. A template is not exclusive, so the same product is sold to many merchants. And when a vulnerability or a bug appears, the fix is not yours to make or to prioritise. On top of which the licence is not perpetual; a substantial annual fee recurs every year.

The second kind: custom development

The mainstream route, and the one most established businesses end up taking.

You get a product that exists only for you, built for your business, with the functions and the requirements set by you. Fixing a bug later is straightforward, because the code is yours to fix. Changes are straightforward for the same reason. And the right to use it is permanent.

The cost is higher. A custom build starts in the tens of thousands and runs into the hundreds of thousands, and that is the honest number rather than the marketing one.

How to decide

It comes down to budget and to requirement, and there is no answer that fits every business. A small operation with ordinary needs is well served by a good template. A business whose operation is the differentiator needs the custom build, because a template will force the operation to fit the software rather than the other way round.

The one thing worth insisting on either way is clarity about what you own at the end. That is the question that separates the two kinds of company more sharply than price does.
