Livestreaming keeps growing, and a lot of businesses want a platform of their own; some people want to build a business on one. But a live-streaming app is not cheap to develop. So how do you approach it, and where can the budget be cut without breaking the thing?
1. Work with a company that does this
The most effective lever is also the least dramatic: commission a company that has built this kind of product before. They will plan against your budget, tell you what is achievable within it, and avoid the expensive mistakes that come from discovering the constraints after launch. Cheap suppliers who have not built one cost more in the end.
2. Build for one platform first
A modern app usually means two builds: Android and iOS. If the budget is limited, look at where your audience actually is and build that one first. The second platform can follow once the business has revenue, or once there is money to spend on it. Launching on one platform a quarter earlier is usually worth more than launching on both a quarter later.
3. Cut functions, deliberately
Go through the requirement list and separate what the product needs to work from what would be nice. Keep the core, defer the secondary functions and the ones that are not yet essential, and add them once the platform is running and you know which ones people actually use.
Cutting scope is uncomfortable, but it is reversible. Cutting quality is not.
4. Keep the design simple
When the budget is tight, the interface does not need to be elaborate. Simple and clean is both cheaper and, for a first version, better: it launches sooner, real users tell you what is wrong with it, and the visual style can be adjusted later against actual behaviour rather than a mock-up.
The pattern
All four levers do the same thing: they move work out of the first version and into a later one, where it can be paid for out of revenue and shaped by evidence. That is the difference between a budget cut and a compromise.
