Are Douyin and WeChat Mini Programs the Same?

A client asked the other day about building a legal consultation platform — on Douyin and on WeChat. The honest starting point is that development cost is the small part of any platform. The real cost sits in promotion and operation, and a good many clients discover that only after the mini program exists and earns nothing.

Same technique, different platform

On the operation side, the book Platform Revolution sets out how different kinds of platform are run and what strategies they use. It is a reasonable place to start before commissioning one.

Technically a Douyin mini program and a WeChat mini program are the same thing — as are Alipay’s, Baidu’s and JD’s. Current tooling can deploy to several platforms with small adjustments rather than a rebuild.

Where the adjustment actually is

1. Identity

Each platform authenticates its own users. A WeChat mini program uses WeChat’s OAuth; a Douyin mini program authenticates through a Douyin account. Same user, same system, different door — and the door decides how much of your audience can get in.

2. Payment

Inside a WeChat mini program, payments must go through WeChat Pay. Inside a Douyin mini program both Alipay and WeChat Pay are available. Inside an Alipay mini program, only Alipay. This is not a preference — it is what the host platform permits, and it shapes the checkout flow you are able to build.

Which platform to build for is therefore a question about where your customers already are, not about which technology is better. The technology is the same. The audience is not.
