Is custom development the right move for an education business, and should it be an app or a mini program? Since the pandemic, sector after sector has moved from offline to online, from the physical premises to an app or a mini program, and the market has changed accordingly.
For a training institution the question is narrower. Traditional education ran through physical premises, and that model has been obstructed repeatedly. An app or a mini program is the bridge between the two, and for most institutions the answer is yes. What follows is what that product has to deliver.
1. Word of mouth gets easier, and marketing gets cheaper
A mini program sits inside WeChat’s audience, which makes establishing a brand and an image considerably faster than building an audience from nothing.
Beyond reach, the product itself can show the school: the campus, the teaching, the facilities, the results. Parents form an impression in a few minutes, and an impression formed that way travels, which is what word of mouth actually is.
2. Teaching stops being tied to a place and a time
Class no longer requires everyone in the same room at the same hour. A student can reach a teacher from anywhere, and a parent can enter through a different route to see how their child is doing and how far the class has progressed.
The part that matters is the shared view. When the school, the teacher and the parent are looking at the same record, managing a student stops being a series of phone calls.
3. Courses are sold and scheduled differently
Live, recorded, real-time conversation: the formats change what a course is. A student can attend from wherever they are, and book a session against their own schedule instead of fitting into a fixed timetable.
That flexibility is the actual product improvement. The fixed-time, fixed-course model was a constraint of physical classrooms, and online delivery that reproduces it has missed the point.
4. Management becomes measurable
With data in the back end, the institution can analyse what is happening and manage teachers and students differently, according to their roles rather than uniformly.
That is where the management cost comes down. Not from spending less on staff, but from spending less time on the coordination that a paper process requires.
