The Eight Golden Rules of User Interface Design

The eight golden rules of user interface interaction design were proposed by Ben Shneiderman in 1998. Shneiderman is a professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, College Park, founder of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, and a member of the university’s UMIACS and ISR. He is a fellow of ACM and AAAS and received the ACM CHI Lifetime Achievement Award.

His eight basic principles of user interface interaction design are:

1. Strive for consistency. A website’s home page should keep a consistent style with every subordinate page, with navigation in the same place; a highly consistent interface feels clean and orderly.

2. Enable frequent users to use shortcuts. Shortcuts reflect the flexibility and efficiency of a product: think whether you click the search button or press Enter when using a search engine.

3. Offer informative feedback. When errors occur, state clearly what the error means, in terms users can understand: nearly everyone has met an HTTP 404 error, but how many people can actually read it?

4. Design dialogs to yield closure. Prompt users after they finish a task or operation. If they complete many actions without feedback, they cannot know whether they achieved their goal.

5. Offer error prevention and simple error handling. For example, grey out buttons that cannot be clicked at the moment, and ask users to confirm before the system executes destructive actions.

6. Permit easy reversal of actions. Most application software has undo and redo; if users always fear that one wrong step is irreversible, the user experience is easy to imagine.

7. Keep users in control. Generally users want to control the interaction themselves; in a task they should be able to stop or exit at any time, not watch helplessly as the system carries on.

8. Reduce short-term memory load. Help users avoid having to remember information: the logical connections between menu items, and better categorisation, help users work out where each function button is.
