Competition in every online category is fierce now. A company that wants a website has two routes: hire a development company, or recruit a technical team. The cost difference between them is large, and it shows in the result. An expensive build is usually a better build; a cheap one tends to be limited in what it can grow into and weak on security. And whatever route you take, the site has to be built for search from the start — retrofit SEO later and half the functions never work the way they should. So where does a high-end build actually begin?
First, know the structure
Before anything is designed, the structure has to be planned. A sensible layout is both better looking and faster for search engines to index. Five points carry most of the weight:
- Use a flat, tree-shaped structure, so that a visitor or a crawler reaches any page within three steps.
- Serve HTML where you can. Static pages are crawled faster than dynamically generated ones, and on Baidu the difference is measurable.
- Build a sitemap and submit it once the site goes live, so the crawler can find everything without guessing.
- Lay out the internal links deliberately. A sensible internal link pattern lets a crawler move freely through the site and connects related content pages to one another.
- Choose the template with care. Where the build runs on a ready-made source, a high-quality template designed for optimisation decides a great deal about how the site is structured — a search-friendly frame that matches the content.
Second, the markup
There is a lot to say about code — the title, description and keyword tags, heading tags, the div and CSS framework — but the one most often skipped is the image. A search engine cannot see a picture. The alt attribute is the only thing it can read, so the keyword and what the image actually shows both have to go in there. Alt text paired with the term you are targeting is one of the cheaper wins in on-page optimisation, and it is routinely left empty.
Third, who builds it
The price of a build tracks the technology and the approach, and development companies offer many different source packages for clients to choose from. A ready-made package saves money up front; the trade-off is limited extensibility, and where secondary development is possible the security is not guaranteed. Better to choose a properly registered company and pay once for a build that is done properly.
