A merchant who wants to sell online has several routes: open a store on a marketplace, build an app, or put up a mall mini program. Marketplace listing fees keep climbing, and building a standalone app stays both difficult and expensive, which is why so many have moved to mini programs instead.
The question that follows is the cost, and one thing can be said first: a mini program costs considerably less than a mall website or an app. The build is inherently simpler, and the platform’s own support for the format is not in doubt. A shop with modest scale and a modest budget is not priced out of this.
What it actually costs cannot be answered without a starting point. There are two common routes.
1. Custom development
The business commissions a development company to build one to one. The merchant supplies the requirement, the team builds against it, and the typical starting figure is 10,000 yuan and up.
This route exists for requirements that are not ordinary. The price follows the function list, and it is the only route that produces something the business actually specified.
2. Templates
A ready-made mini program is configured and published, and the merchant needs only the right to use it. Some templates cost a few hundred to a few thousand; some are free.
This route exists for requirements that are ordinary, and the trade-off is the same one that applies to any template: speed and price in exchange for a ceiling.
Which applies to you
The deciding factor is the complexity of what you need. A shopfront, a catalogue, an order flow and a promotion or two sit comfortably inside a template. Anything that involves the business’s own process does not.
A useful test before commissioning anything: write down the functions you need, then see whether an existing template lists them. If it does, the template is the honest answer and the custom quote is money spent on nothing.
