Industry is the ballast of the economy, and digitalisation underpins industrial growth and upgrading. MIIT has called for deepening the digital transformation of manufacturing: implementing the industrial internet innovation project, upgrading networks, improving a multi-tier platform system, bringing platforms into parks and enterprises, and expanding 5G-plus-industrial-internet applications.
In 2021 China’s industrial internet innovation sat in the global first tier, moving from the exploration stage into a new phase of deep cultivation and empowerment. In 2022, infrastructure and integrated applications are expected to step up together, supporting cost reduction, better quality and higher efficiency for enterprises.
Policy support keeps building
The Central Economic Work Conference and the national industrial and IT conference set specific requirements for manufacturing and the industrial internet, and the State Council’s 14th Five-Year digital economy plan calls for optimising digital infrastructure and building reliable, flexible and secure industrial internet infrastructure.
Central and local support policies kept strengthening through 2021: top-level design is largely in place, supporting measures are filling in, and the development environment keeps improving. Under the Industrial Internet Innovation Development Action Plan (2021-2023), 2022 aims for better new infrastructure, more visible integration results and stronger security, among five goals; the 14th Five-Year information and communication industry plan adds sector-specific guidance on infrastructure, integration and security.
Infrastructure: quantity and quality together
The network foundation is solidifying: enterprise inner-network upgrades based on TSN and 5G keep expanding, 5G base stations exceed 1.4 million, industrial 5G private networks continue to roll out, and high-quality outer networks cover 300-plus prefecture-level cities. 2022 will see appropriately forward-leaning 5G builds with deeper coverage in industry and other key sectors.
The platform system now includes over 150 sizeable industrial internet platforms, with comprehensive, sector-specific and specialised platforms all growing fast. In 2022 the multi-tier platform system will be systematically upgraded and pushed into parks and enterprises to raise enterprises’ digital technology capability.
On data: the national industrial internet big data centre will be initially completed, with pilot applications, open data sharing across the supply chain, and a secure, trusted industrial data space. A tiered big data centre system spanning national, regional and industry levels will be built out.
Applications multiplying
Six typical application modes have taken shape – platform-based design, intelligent manufacturing, networked collaboration, personalised customisation, service extension and digital management – spreading across 40 major economic sectors. Over 2,000 5G-plus-industrial-internet projects are under way nationwide, with early deployment in ten key industries such as mining, steel, power and petrochemicals, and 20 typical scenarios like remote equipment control and machine-vision quality inspection.
2022 plans include an upgraded version of 5G-plus-industrial-internet with production-line and workshop-level scenarios, 5G full-connection projects, and a batch of system solution vendors – plus data aggregation, new-model cultivation and integrated application programmes. With infrastructure and applications advancing together, the industrial internet is set to help enterprises cut costs, raise quality and efficiency, and develop safely and sustainably.
