What a Mini Program Really Costs: The Full Bill

Mini program development has matured considerably in the last few years, which makes the cost question answerable rather than vague. So what does it actually take to build one, and are there hidden charges once a development company is involved? Here is the arithmetic.

1. Verification: 300 RMB

If you do not need features that require verification — WeChat Pay being the main one — you can skip verification entirely and pay nothing. If you already hold a verified official account, the mini program can be registered and verified from that account’s back end, which is quicker than starting cold.

2. Server: 1,000 to 10,000 RMB a year

The figure depends mostly on how many members you register and how many daily active users you expect. More of both means a heavier server, and a heavier server costs more. Where daily activity is part of the plan, take a dedicated server rather than shared hosting — the configuration can then be upgraded as the numbers grow instead of being replaced.

3. HTTPS certificate: from about 1,250 RMB a year

Price tracks the level of security required. The major cloud providers list certificates from roughly 1,250 RMB a year at entry level, and some domain registrars include the first year free. Worth asking when you buy the domain rather than three months later.

4. Third-party modules: from around 100 RMB

SMS verification, live chat pop-ups, mapping, occasionally payment — small components that are bought rather than built, each with its own licence fee. None is expensive on its own; together they are a line worth listing.

5. Feature development: the substantial part

This is where the money is, and the price depends on the requirements and on how many screens have to be designed. On the current market a mini program starts at around 10,000 RMB.

A template is cheaper and can land below that figure, but what it includes is the basic set. A custom build works the other way: the company takes your requirements and builds to them, you handle the coordination and the progress chasing, and they handle front end, back end and UI. Because the work is done by specialist engineers the cost is higher — from around 10,000 RMB — and where the features are complex, the schedule lengthens and the price rises with it.

Where the hidden charges are not

A professional company’s quote normally covers page design and feature development, and normally excludes the server. That split should be stated before the contract rather than discovered afterwards, and a supplier who states it plainly has nothing to hide.

Two closing notes. Price is tied to requirements: more requirements means more features, and more features means a higher figure. And if the budget genuinely is not there yet, a front-end-only mini program with no back end cuts the cost considerably — a few thousand RMB buys a set of pages. What it does not buy is interaction, campaigns or a shop. It displays, and that is all, which limits what it can do for the business.
