Most small and mid-sized businesses now have a WeChat mini program, and the format has been applied across a wide range of sectors: games, commerce, food and beverage, utilities, travel, local services. Solutions exist for all of them.
Yet a good number of the businesses that build one never manage to make money from it. That is not a technology problem. It is an operating problem, and it starts with a misunderstanding of what the format is.
It runs on the social graph
A mini program is used through WeChat’s social relationships, and everything about how it spreads follows from that. It is not a storefront that happens to be inside a chat app; it is a product whose distribution is the conversation.
That is the reason it works as a growth channel at all. A business that treats it as a website with a different skin will build something technically fine and wonder why nobody passes it on.
Why it is easier to hold a customer
A mini program gives a business a new place to grow: an entry point that does not require the customer to install anything, and does not confront them with the interruptions they have learned to ignore.
Open any app and there is a window to dismiss, an ad to skip, a permission to grant. A mini program largely avoids that, which is why the experience is less irritating and why users are more willing to come back. The friction that advertising adds is the friction a mini program does not have, and that is what makes it reasonable to expect a stable, long-term customer relationship from it.
Experience is the whole of it
The user experience decides whether the operation works, and it has to be considered everywhere rather than at the front door.
The page is the obvious case. If the interface does not match what the user finds acceptable, the experience is uncomfortable and they leave, without telling you why. A successful product is closely tied to how its pages are designed, in the same way that a shop is judged by how it presents what it sells.
That sounds like a design point. In practice it is the operating strategy: every decision about what to show, in what order, at what moment, is a decision about whether the customer stays long enough to buy.
