Most conversations about what a mini program costs jump straight to the development fee. But some of the money goes on items you pay for whatever you build, and knowing them in advance stops the quote from being a surprise. Here is the fixed side of the bill.
1. Account verification
If all you want is a small utility and you submit it under a personal account, there is no fee at all. The catch is that the categories open to a personal account are heavily restricted. A commerce mini program is out of the question.
A commerce mini program needs WeChat Pay, and WeChat Pay needs a verified entity. The usual route is to register an official account first, verify that, then apply for WeChat Pay, and let the mini program reuse the official account’s verification. One verified official account can currently cover ten mini programs. Verification costs 300 yuan a year.
2. Server
A purely local mini program that keeps all its logic on the device needs no back end, so this line disappears. It also does very little, which is why most projects do not go that way. For everything else, there are three common options.
Cloud development
The platform’s built-in cloud development comes with a free quota: 5 GB of storage, 2 GB of database and 5 GB a month of CDN traffic. For a small user base, or for testing, that is enough to start on. The drawback is lock-in. Cloud development is the platform’s own stack, so migrating later can mean rewriting code, and that should be weighed before the first line is written rather than after.
A cloud server
Alternatively, run your own on Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud or similar. Pricing is transparent and configurations can be sized to what you actually need; start small and upgrade later, since the entry tier is not where the money goes. A minimum configuration runs around 500 yuan a year.
A server also needs a domain. Budget under 100 yuan a year for that.
An HTTPS certificate
Mini programs must be served over HTTPS, which means an SSL certificate. Most cloud providers now issue free certificates, and if your requirements are ordinary, a free one is fine. A paid certificate, for those who want the additional assurance, runs roughly 2,000 to 5,000 yuan a year.
One item worth planning around
Renaming. A personal mini program gets two free name changes a year. A business mini program gets two a year while it is unpublished; once it is live, a rename requires re-verification, at the same 300 yuan.
That is worth knowing because the name carries real weight in in-platform search. Choose it as though it were permanent, because in practice it nearly is.
