What a WeChat Mini Program Livestream Feature Costs

Livestream commerce is the part of e-commerce WeChat was slowest to enter, and it came in through the side door: the third-party developers already living inside the ecosystem built livestream selling into mini programs, under the idea of livestreaming for everyone. No Li Jiaqi, no Viya — a brand runs the room itself and sells on its own following.

Which raises the practical question. What does building the feature actually cost? It breaks into four lines.

1. Servers

Whichever route you take, the server bill tracks storage and bandwidth. A simple mini program runs on roughly 1,000 RMB a year. One with more storage or heavier traffic sits between 1,000 and 10,000 RMB a year. Livestream adds concurrent streams and video relay, so if the room is the point of the product, budget toward the upper end rather than the lower.

2. The livestream system itself

This is where people overestimate. A livestream system is not a five-figure build. Where a mature system is bought rather than written from scratch, the price lands between a few thousand and about 10,000 RMB. The sensible sequence is to look at what already exists on the market, compare what each option includes, and choose against your own use case. Ready-made systems generally connect straight to WeChat’s own livestream commerce plugin, which is itself still being extended — buying into it means inheriting those updates as they arrive.

3. Payment

Any mini program that takes orders needs payment, which means a third-party payment interface, usually WeChat Pay and sometimes UnionPay. WeChat Pay requires verification at 300 RMB a year. UnionPay through an agent carries a withdrawal fee of roughly 0.6% to 1%, which varies a little by industry.

4. Operation

A livestream needs someone running it: scheduling the sessions, the on-air promotions, the product line-up, the in-store campaigns. Then the ongoing maintenance — bug fixes, routine server work, security. The rule of thumb is that if the room is operating normally, the revenue it generates covers the operating and maintenance cost without much effort.

The total

Add the four lines and the figure is a few thousand RMB, not the tens of thousands people expect. The caveat is timing rather than money. Livestream commerce is still expanding, so a merchant who builds while the audience is forming gets the growth; wait until the phase is over and the same feature buys considerably less.
