1. Domain registration
The domain is the user’s first impression of the site. Choose a short, easy-to-remember domain so users can recall it quickly, raising return visits and easing recommendations; the shorter the domain, the lower the memory cost. The domain should echo the site’s subject or name, letting people associate it with the site’s content at a glance: use the company name, trademark, site name or product information when choosing. Domain suffixes do not affect Baidu’s web search, but suffixes should also be easy for users to remember. Common suffixes such as .com, .cn and .net are easier to remember, while uncommon ones can breed distrust and raise the user’s judgment cost. Among Chinese netizens, .com domains carry the strongest trust.
2. Server and space rental
The server’s speed and stability directly affect user experience and search engines’ crawling. Choose a stable, fast server or hosting space, from a capable, regular provider. The major domestic cloud server platforms’ stability meets most enterprises’ needs; their technology ranks among the best domestically and carries real technical backing. Less capable providers may fail to deliver good service, with no guarantee of stability.
3. Server network bandwidth
Bandwidth directly affects users’ access speed. In the early stage, estimate the site’s traffic and the bandwidth a single page load consumes. A site’s maximum traffic depends on the number of simultaneous visitors (the site’s connection count) and the traffic one page consumes.
Maximum traffic = connection count times the traffic a single page consumes.
Choose the access provider by user distribution. Because of the interconnection issue between carriers, the choice matters: if your users sit mostly on China Unicom, pick a provider with good Unicom access; if mostly on China Telecom, pick one with good Telecom access; if nationwide, pick one that handles interconnection well.
4. Website content planning
1. Set clear goals. The site should have clear goals, and page content should work around them.
2. Set the positioning. From the goals fix the site’s positioning: its audience, promotion channels, promotion methods and style.
3. Study peer companies. Learn competitors’ physical structure, URL architecture, keyword layout, current indexing and rankings, then take their strengths and mend your weaknesses.
4. Fix the content layout. Based on goals and positioning, and referencing peers, decide the company site’s internal section division and the content shown to the audience.
5. Confirm keywords. The site should have core keywords; focus the whole site on them, and build auxiliary keywords per section, guiding users to the relevant content pages.
6. Plan operations. Without dedicated operations after launch, the building work’s effect is badly discounted. Some corporate sites sit unchanged for two or three years after completion: customers cannot learn the company’s newest products from the site, and new prospects cannot see recent developments. If no one inside the company can run it, entrust operations to a third party and keep the site alive, so the initial investment yields greater value.
5. Cost budgeting
Website building costs fall into four parts. 1. Domain annual fee: domains renew yearly with the registrar; an ordinary domain runs about 100 yuan a year. 2. Building cost: the cost of building the site yourself or outsourcing it. 3. Hosting service fee: after the site is built, a server must carry its code and data; for a corporate site, one entry-level Alibaba Cloud ECS server suffices, while a high-concurrency site needs several machines with load balancing. 4. Content maintenance cost: the salary of staff updating content and managing the server, or the outsourcing fee for third-party managed operations.
