App development is a relatively long process, and finishing on schedule is satisfying, but most projects are delayed by the various uncertainties arising midway. Here is an analysis of several problems that can appear in development.
1. Insufficient requirement analysis
Requirement analysis for app development is not taken seriously: specific functions are not described in detail and users’ basic needs are not understood. App software design and coding start before requirement analysis is adequate, so new user requirements keep appearing during development, leaving app development without a clear direction, and users may not even accept the finished product.
2. Non-standard development processes
Fewer development engineers means fewer interactions and interfaces between programmes; a short development cycle means the same few engineers carry the app from start to finish. These are advantages of small app projects, but they make errors easy. For example, in development a few people roughly discuss the basic data structures and function interfaces without establishing formal documentation. Missing or non-standard documentation is a widespread problem in small and medium app development management.
3. Perfunctory testing
In app development, skipping unit testing and going straight to system testing happens repeatedly. The reason is that although each module is relatively simple, testing one module requires building test programs. To test whether a function is correct you should call it with test data, which means writing test data, but some testers find it troublesome, reasoning that other modules will be ready soon and a few runs with real data will do. This method is actually inefficient, spending large amounts of time locating a single error in the module, and some boundary cases are easily overlooked.
4. Endless bugs
App development easily produces bugs in every stage of analysis, design and coding. Lack of necessary testing, review and inspection at each stage produces bugs, and fixing them keeps producing new ones, making bugs hard to remedy and products hard to integrate, wasting large amounts of time and energy. These problems often lengthen schedules, raise investment, cause user dissatisfaction, and even lead to failed app development.
