How to Promote a WeChat Mini Program

A mini program gives a shop or a company a channel it did not have before, and with a new channel comes a new set of decisions about how to build it and how to run it. The characteristic that matters most here is the combination: instant, precise delivery, then the user leaves. It does not accumulate loyalty the way an app on a home screen does.

Running a group chat, in particular, consumes a great deal of time and energy. Given that, how should a shop actually promote a mini program, and what does a coherent plan look like?

Share a page, not the program

The first distinction is the one most people miss. Sharing a mini program to a friend or a group does not have to mean sharing the entry point. Share a specific page instead: the product page, the service page, the booking form.

The difference in effect is large. A generic entry point asks the recipient to go looking; a product page shows them the thing. One is an invitation to browse, the other is an offer, and offers get acted on.

Know who it is for

A mini program still needs a defined audience. Broadcasting widely across the internet, which was the standard approach a decade ago, is imprecise and does not suit a business with a specific customer in mind.

For a physical shop, the mini program has an advantage that is easy to underestimate: it is unfamiliar enough to be worth opening. Put the code where customers already are, in the shop and at offline events, and it becomes a reason to look rather than an ad to ignore.

Build somewhere for the traffic to land

To retain anyone, give them a reason to follow the official account or join a group. Community marketing inside a group is what raises stickiness: share products, share services, answer questions, and keep doing it.

Think about what actually happens on the receiving side. Somebody shares an article that is genuinely useful, and the reader’s reaction is gratitude for the article. Somebody shares a contact card, and the reaction is a decision about whether to add it. Somebody shares a product page that solves a real problem, and the reaction is that this is worth something. Only the third produces a customer.

Match the reach to the kind of business

For a mini program built around local life, sharing should stay local: the groups worth posting in are the ones in the same area. Pushing a neighbourhood service into groups in another city produces nothing, because nobody there can walk in.

For e-commerce, video and food, and for utility mini programs generally, the channel is wider: the platform’s own surfaces, the company website, other channels entirely. Those categories travel, so the reach can too.
