In nearly every client consultation, the most frequently asked question is: how long does website development take?
In fact the length of a website project depends on the project type, the site’s sections and functions, language versions, terminal versions, the design requirements, the building company’s level of ability, and how fine-grained the production is.
1. The website project type
Website types include corporate official sites, shopping and e-commerce sites, functional sites (that is, portal sites) and industry sites such as B2B and B2C. Each industry differs, each type differs, and so do the functions needed, so the time required depends on the website type.
2. The site’s sections and functions
Different site types carry different sections. A normal corporate site has a homepage, company introduction, product centre, solutions, news centre and contact us; add a download centre, member centre or recruitment section and the workload is clearly different. More sections mean more time.
3. Language versions
Some industries and clients need not only Simplified Chinese but English, Spanish and other foreign versions. Building several language versions naturally takes more time than one.
4. Terminal versions
User terminals split into desktop PC, mobile and responsive websites. A PC plus mobile site needs mobile adaptation, so the time increases.
5. The website’s design
Design requirements depend on the industry and the client. Some clients have their own ideas about design and want things done their way, so the designer’s first draft takes longer, and revisions take longer too, because design has no fixed standard. Some design projects are settled on the first draft, while others need three to eight rounds, so the time certainly differs.
6. The building company’s overall strength
A company whose staff are highly skilled, experienced and practised naturally works faster. Some companies hire only junior engineers who lack project experience, and their progress is somewhat slower.
