Six Things to Get Right When Commissioning an App

1. Function and positioning

Start with what the app does, then with who it is for — the audience and the field. Get those two clear and everything after them goes more easily; leave them vague and no amount of good development will save the project.

2. Refine the requirements

Before commissioning anything, push the requirements down to detail. Development teams usually bring a product manager and a planner, but the earlier refinement is still the client’s work, and experience keeps saying the same thing: the clearer the requirements at the start, the smoother everything downstream.

3. Choose the team carefully

A custom app needs a team you can rely on. Two things tell you whether a team can deliver: experience, and completeness. A full team covers a product manager, a planner, an interaction designer, a visual designer, a project manager, an iOS developer, an Android developer, a back-end developer and a tester. A team missing three of those is not a smaller version of that team — it is a different proposition.

4. Prototype first, then build

The prototype should be finished before development starts. It is a working demonstration with no data behind it — an empty run — whose job is to show the interaction and the visual design of the whole app. Expect it to go through several rounds. Only when it is confirmed should anyone write production code.

5. Track the build throughout

Follow the development as it happens. Many custom projects slip not because the work was hard but because communication broke down mid-way, and by the time the slip is visible the schedule has already gone. That is why clients increasingly assign one person to track the project — not to interfere, but to keep both sides in the same conversation.

6. Plan for what comes after

Launching the app is step one. Upgrades and maintenance follow, and they need to be arranged before they are urgent: a maintainer identified, a budget provisioned, a plan for the next version. Apps that are not maintained do not stand still — they drift out of compatibility and out of use.
