Smart Customer Service Should Not Be the After-Sales Pain Point

Over the holiday, businesses everywhere switched on smart customer service. The results, as ever, were mixed: a survey found more than 90% of respondents have used an automated support line, but only about 40% found it actually useful. When it fails, the failure lands on after-sales — and on the brand.

What bots are good at

Smart service is fast, efficient and always on, and AI and big data keep cutting its cost. For e-commerce this matters more than most: online transactions are information-poor by nature, and purchases get built on repeated questions and comparison. In agricultural e-commerce, the blocker often is not product quality but slow, clumsy after-sales.

Where it breaks

The failure modes are familiar: answers that miss the question, loops that repeat the same script, personal questions the bot cannot handle — and a transfer-to-human that queues for minutes until the customer gives up. Worse, some sellers use automation as a shield, manufacturing communication barriers to dodge their obligations.

The working arrangement

In most fields today, automation is a supplement to human service, not a replacement — sellers should be clear-eyed about what their bots can actually do. The technical lesson for vendors is to aim at the real pain points of each business rather than shipping a generic script. The management lesson for sellers is to invest in personalised, human-feeling service on top of the automated baseline, with people handling the complex and the urgent. And for the shield-users, there needs to be an enforcement answer: supervision of after-sales, so that communication between seller and buyer stays possible.
