Merchants are using the mini program channel to widen their traffic, hold on to customers and generate referrals. To keep up, a merchant needs to register early and get a working mini program out quickly — which brings the decision down to two routes.
Route one: buy a template
A template is a framework planned and built by a third party and licensed to merchants. Prices run from a few hundred to a few thousand RMB, and the market contains plenty of suppliers who should not be trusted at any of those prices.
The structural problem with a template is ownership. There is no independent back end, which means no independent system: the merchant depends on the third party for everything the platform decides to do. That dependency shapes the business in ways that are not obvious until it matters — a price change, a feature withdrawn, a service shut down.
Route two: commission a custom build
The better answer for a business that wants a system of its own is to hand the requirements to a software company that builds mini programs, have them build to the specification, and settle the invoice once the merchant has inspected the result.
A custom build is priced on time, people and design, which makes it more expensive: from ten to twenty thousand RMB, and up to two hundred thousand at the top. It is quoted against the feature list, so the range is wide by design. The schedule is usually shorter than clients fear — with the requirements agreed, a month is often enough, and only a feature-heavy build runs into several months.
Why the difference is worth paying
A template cannot absorb the differences between one company’s process and another’s. A custom build can, because the requirements drive it — and a supplier who wants to keep trading has to get the details right, since the final payment depends on the client being satisfied. The same incentive is what makes upgrades possible later: the system can be revised as the business changes, because the business owns it.
One more thing a custom build brings is data. Orders are calculated into sales reports by day, week and month, so the merchant sees the marketing numbers as they happen and can adjust direction while adjustment still helps.
