What does a small business need to think about before building a website, and how should it go about it? There is more to it than the price, and the order of the work matters more than the budget.
For a small business the website often matters more than it does for a large one. The company is at the beginning, and how far it gets depends considerably on how it presents itself. There are other ways to advertise, but a brand site carries an authority the others do not — the difference between being described and being looked up.
1. Decide whether you need one at all
Start by testing the assumption. A corporate site is close to essential today, but the stage a company is at and the channel it actually sells through differ, so the answer depends on who the customers are and how the business reaches them. If a website is not the best answer to that question, it is worth pausing before spending on one.
2. Write the requirement down
Once the decision is made, work out what the site has to do: the structure, the pages, the content. Then write it into a requirement document. A site built against a written brief is a different project from a site built against a conversation — and the difference shows up in the invoice.
3. Choose the developer
A small business rarely has a technical team, so the build is normally outsourced. Choosing the company is where the project is won or lost: look at the work they have actually shipped, ask who will build yours, and check that the quote follows the brief rather than preceding it.
4. What to check before you sign
Four things are worth confirming in writing. What exactly is delivered — design files, source code, admin access. What the maintenance arrangement is, and for how long. Whether the site is built so that you can edit it afterwards without calling anyone. And what happens to the site if the relationship ends. The last one is the one clients forget, and the one that costs most when it happens.
None of this is complicated. It is simply the part that gets skipped when a small business is in a hurry — and a modest site built against a clear brief beats an ambitious one built against none.
