What Is User Interface Design?

User interface (UI) design is one of several disciplines involved in designing product software. Whether user experience (UX), interaction design (ID) or visual/graphic design, all connect to user interface design.

Generally speaking, the user interface is the vehicle of communication between humans and machines: the user issues commands to the machine, the machine starts a system process, responds with data and gives information feedback, and the user can decide the next step based on the feedback.

For electronic products, user interface design mainly concerns layout and information structure, that is, how interface elements are presented on monitors and various terminal device platforms, including game interfaces and TV interfaces.

Excellent user interface design uses clear, consistent visual hierarchy and content structure to guide users correctly toward their goals, and cuts unnecessary content and design elements.

Excellent user interfaces convey information through real-world symbolic metaphors, such as buttons, volume sliders, calendars and the floppy-disk style save icon.

The design elements making up a user interface mainly include:

1. Inputs: components that let users make selections or enter data, including checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns, text boxes and other interactive components.

2. Navigation: components for choosing destinations and filtering data, including menu bars, scroll bars, breadcrumbs, tabs and pagination.

3. Information: interactive design elements that give users feedback, including icons, text, media, progress bars and tips.

4. Efficient product designers refer to excellent design cases, design conventions, standards and usability principles to ensure interface solutions fit user needs.
