In What Situations Do You Need Custom Software Development?

Custom software development is tailoring built to the client’s requirements. Against pure products, it faces longer implementation cycles, higher costs and bigger risks. By workload and degree, it divides into full custom development and partial custom development. Full custom means the software vendor does requirement analysis, system design, coding and testing from zero at the client’s needs; the risk is high and the cycle long, so avoid it where possible. Partial custom means customising on the basis of a general product, development platform or existing similar product, demanding good extensibility and secondary development ability from the product, or the process becomes painful. So when is custom development needed? Described with enterprise users as the example.

1. The enterprise’s individualised needs are prominent

The enterprise’s business needs are complex and individualised, or its business model keeps changing across development stages. The enterprise has chosen certain products, but the product cannot meet its needs in different situations, requiring adaptive improvement and extension through custom development on the existing product’s basis.

2. The enterprise demands very much of the system

If you demand a great deal of the system, your individualised needs are many: many of the product’s functions are useless to you (a burden), and the functions you need are absent. Then custom development is unavoidable, with longer time and higher cost, but satisfaction also runs higher; this is the advantage of successful custom development, and discerning clients generally take this road.

3. No similar product exists on the market

Without doubt, if the market has nothing and you urgently need it, find a software vendor with similar experience and have it custom-built to your requirements. Remember, when choosing the vendor, weigh continuous after-sales service: it is the precondition for the custom software’s good application.

4. Generic products cannot satisfy; develop and extend upon them

Here the product meets the user’s main needs but not the related ones, so development and extension proceed on the generic product’s basis, the common secondary development in software. XZS Tech not only owns a custom development platform but has accumulated on it many applications closely fitting enterprise business needs.

5. Multiple systems already exist and need integration

This mode can only be realised through custom development, exchanging data between systems. If the systems come from multiple vendors, you may need to coordinate them to provide interfaces for the inter-system development. Grasp the client’s requirements fully and minimise the customisation workload, lowering the cycle, cost and risk. In a sense, custom development exists universally in enterprise informatisation: it can neither be magnified without limit nor avoided entirely, and must be faced correctly.

XZS Tech is a Shenzhen-based development company. We build custom mini programs, WeChat and mobile apps, e-commerce systems and corporate websites, covering requirement analysis, design, development and after-sales support, and we hand over the source code at delivery.
