Is It Still Worth Building a Mini Program in 2022?

Since mini programs launched in 2017, the market has grown quickly, and industry after industry has moved into the format. By 2022, is there still any reason to talk about it?

Yes, and for a reason that has nothing to do with being early. If the business is going through a digital transition, whether to raise productivity or to hold on to its customer relationships, a mini program is the window and the bridge. It is not the only one, but it is the cheapest one that reaches people where they already are.

The problem it solves

Traditional promotion is difficult and expensive to sustain, and a business that does not adapt to how information now moves loses ground to those that do. A mini program is the most direct route to a brand presence, because it puts the product in front of people inside an app they open all day.

The maintenance side is what makes it durable. A physical channel costs money whether or not anyone comes through it; a mini program costs a fraction and keeps working.

How to get one built

Custom development means the product is designed against the client’s actual requirement, which requires a team that can deliver it.

The complication is the market. As mini programs grew, the number of companies offering development grew with them, and the range now runs from established firms to individuals working alone. The quality varies as much as the price does.

So the work before commissioning is the same as in any procurement: establish what you need, then check who can actually build it, then talk about money. Doing those in the other order is how businesses end up paying for a product that does not fit.

What to check

Three things carry most of the weight. Whether the company is properly established and can be held to a contract. Whether it has built something comparable, and can show it live rather than in a portfolio. And whether the source code is handed over at the end, which is what determines whether you can leave.

That last one is the tell. A supplier who will not hand over the code is telling you that the relationship depends on you being unable to walk away.

XZS Tech is a Shenzhen-based development company. We build custom mini programs, WeChat and mobile apps, e-commerce systems and corporate websites, covering requirement analysis, design, development and after-sales support, and we hand over the source code at delivery.
