Why Requirement Analysis Matters in Application Software Development

In a company’s informatisation and software development, application software is the tool of enterprise growth, but its purpose is to help the client reach the business goals it hopes for. In development, the usual situation is that the client knows its own business processes very well but is unfamiliar with how software works, especially at the start, when expectations of the process and results are not yet clear. Meanwhile the average development company, unfamiliar with the enterprise’s business processes, fails to study and check them properly at the early planning and requirement analysis stage. Then even excellent command of the technology can lead the project to failure.

So for an application software company, the most important part of a successful project is the early requirement analysis: first learn from the client, fully understand the user’s business processes, and grasp deeply the business goals the client wants the project to reach. Consult and analyse around these premises to find the right entry point and development direction. Also weigh the user’s present actual situation, existing application systems, staff and user acceptance, ease of use, long-term business goals, long-term informatisation planning, and consistency with superior supervising departments, among other complex questions.

The application software development process

The whole process divides broadly into five major stages: software requirements, software design, software coding, software testing and software delivery, and each stage splits into several development steps.

The requirement analysis stage

1. Before starting a project, the company first communicates with the client. What is the purpose? To learn what the user needs, and from that to sketch the basic functions the software must achieve; this is also called client requirement analysis. This step is vital in the whole process: if you cannot even pin down the client’s basic needs, the software will never satisfy them.

2. The requirement analysts get an initial understanding from the user, listing the development project’s major function modules and the sub-modules inside each, and for functions the client clearly requires, roughly define a small number of interfaces.

3. Based on experience and the requirements, write a functional requirements document, clearly setting out the system’s major function modules and their sub-modules, together with the relevant interfaces and their functions.

4. The systems analyst confirms the requirements with the user once more.

That is the full text of why requirement analysis matters in application software development. Hope it inspires everyone to take requirement analysis seriously when developing software.
